When Do You Need a Licensed Asbestos Contractor?

According to the HSE, asbestos exposure results in the deaths of 5,000 workers annually. Therefore, it is crucial to manage any asbestos found on your property safely and, in some cases, promptly.

Specialist intervention may be necessary in certain scenarios, such as:

  • High intensity exposure
  • Presence of large quantities of asbestos
  • Extended duration of work
  • Condition of asbestos-containing material poses a risk to others

Main Types of Asbestos:

  • Crocidolite (blue)
  • Amosite (brown)
  • Chrysotile (white)

Although all types are dangerous, crocidolite and amosite are particularly hazardous due to their higher friability.

Asbestos becomes most hazardous when its fibres are released into the air through the disturbance of materials.

Before undertaking work like strip-outs, demolitions, or refurbishments, surveys and tests may be needed to ensure the safety of workers and occupants.

Asbestos-Containing Materials Requiring a Licensed Contractor:

    • Sprayed asbestos coatings
      (limpet asbestos)
    • Lagging on pipes and boilers
    • Asbestos millboard
    • Loose fill insulation
    • Loose or fine asbestos-containing debris and dust
    • Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB)

If you are unsure whether the asbestos on your property requires a licensed contractor or if it exceeds safe control limits, please contact a member of the Goodbye Asbestos team for advice.
